Rainfall Boosts Soil Moisture, Supports Afghan Rain-Fed Crops: FAO
Recent rainfall has increased soil moisture across many parts of Afghanistan, creating favorable conditions for rain-fed agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stated.
The FAO reported that the rains have improved soil moisture levels, benefiting rain-fed cultivation and crop growth. Widespread rainfall is expected for the fourth consecutive week, with the heaviest precipitation forecast for central, eastern, and southeastern provinces. This raises the risk of flash floods in those areas.
The agency also warned that temperatures may drop below zero in some regions, posing a risk of frost damage to crops in northeastern, eastern, and central highland areas.
Separately, the National Disaster Management Authority reported that floods, landslides, and lightning strikes in 13 provinces over the past 24 hours caused 17 deaths, 26 injuries, and substantial financial losses.
