The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) marked International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Feb. 11 by stating that 1,607 days have passed since the Taliban imposed a ban on girls' education, describing it as a "painful picture of Afghanistan's future."

UNAMA said the day is observed in Afghanistan with "deep sorrow," as girls and women have been absent from sciences and other vital sectors for more than four years.

In a statement, UNAMA again urged the Taliban to lift the prohibition on education for girls and women above age 12.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2015 to promote equal participation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

The day honors achievements by women and girl scientists, stresses the need to eliminate gender discrimination and encourages girls to pursue studies in basic sciences.

The United Nations described the purpose of the day as "promoting full and equal access of women to science and strengthening their role in development and technology."
