Taliban's Supreme Court announced that eight women and eight men were flogged on charges of extramarital relations, sexual brokering and theft. The individuals received between 25 and 39 lashes each, along with suspended prison sentences ranging from five months to one year.

In a statement dated Wednesday, 22 Dalu (Feb. 11), the Supreme Court said its primary court in Kabul's Zone 2 flogged 14 people, including eight women, for what it described as "extramarital sexual relations and sexual brokering."

In a separate statement, the court reported flogging two people in Alisheng district of Laghman province on theft charges.

The Supreme Court statements did not provide further details on the identities of those punished or the specific circumstances of the cases.

Taliban authorities have flogged at least 87 people, including women, across Afghanistan over the past 10 days on various charges, according to the report.

Taliban officials describe public floggings of those convicted by their courts as implementation of Islamic Sharia law, despite opposition from international organizations that view the punishments as corporal punishment and torture.
