World Food Programme: Millions in Afghanistan Begin Ramadan with Hunger

Hasht-e Subh|

KABUL — The World Food Programme stated that millions of people in Afghanistan are starting Ramadan amid hunger.

In a statement on Tuesday, the agency emphasized its efforts, in cooperation with partners, to provide necessary food for families. The World Food Programme added: "In a country where 17 million people face severe hunger, the month of Ramadan, a time of reflection and forgiveness, adds more pressure."

The organization noted that many people, lacking reliable income after years of economic difficulties, drought and limited access to basic services, are entering Ramadan. It highlighted that children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers — the most vulnerable groups — receive special nutritious food, but these aids now face budget cuts, threatening millions of Afghans who desperately need them.

Various UN agencies have warned that 17 million people in Afghanistan require lifesaving assistance. Ramadan has arrived as food prices in the country have risen.
