World Food Programme Begins Emergency Food Aid for Families Displaced by Afghanistan-Pakistan Conflicts
The World Food Programme has begun distributing emergency food aid to more than 20,000 families displaced by conflicts between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In the first phase, nutritious biscuits will be provided to meet urgent food needs, followed by food aid or cash assistance for two months to the most vulnerable families. Specialized food products will also be distributed to children, pregnant women and lactating mothers to address their nutritional requirements.
The aid targets displaced families in the provinces of Nuristan, Kunar, Nangarhar, Paktia, Khost, Paktika, Zabul and Kandahar.
John Ayliffe, head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, said the population faces multiple crises, including increased conflicts with Pakistan, regional tensions, hunger and malnutrition.
He added that the closure of the Afghanistan-Pakistan route and the intensification of conflict in the Middle East are creating serious challenges for the organization's emergency response in Afghanistan.
