Transparency International releases 2025 report on global corruption

Transparency International released its 2025 annual Corruption Perceptions Index on Tuesday, stating that corruption is increasing worldwide, including in countries with well-established democracies due to declining leadership quality.
Higher scores indicate lower perceived levels of public sector corruption, while lower scores reflect higher levels. The report lists Afghanistan with a score of 16, down one point from 17 in 2024. Afghanistan's historical scores include 8 in 2012 and 2013, 12 in 2014, 11 in 2015, 15 in 2016 and 2017, 16 in 2018 and 2019, 19 in 2020, 16 in 2021, 24 in 2022, 20 in 2023, and 17 in 2024. The current score is comparable to levels in 2018, 2019, and 2021.
Other countries' scores include the United States at 64, Canada at 75, New Zealand at 81, United Kingdom at 70, France at 66, Sweden at 80, Iran at 23, and Pakistan at 28.
This assessment comes as officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan have repeatedly emphasized that administrative corruption in the country has been reduced to zero.
