Taliban remove accident-prone tomb from busy Herat road
Taliban members in Herat removed a tomb from the middle of one of the city's busiest roads in the Darb Khosh area. The tomb, believed to be decades old and associated with a respected religious figure, had repeatedly caused accidents, particularly involving motorcycles, in recent years.
In the most recent incident in the month of Jadi this year, a newlywed groom died after his motorcycle collided with the structure. The tomb had been renovated multiple times and previously led to several accidents and fatalities among Herat residents. During the previous republic era, some religious figures had blocked efforts to remove it.
Following multiple deadly incidents, journalists and civil activists called for the tomb's removal from the roadway. Taliban forces carried out the demolition at midnight on Thursday, 30 Dalu.
No written records confirm the identity of the person buried there, though locals regard it as the mausoleum of a highly respected religious elder. Herat is home to numerous such sites known as 'mausoleums of the elders.'
Several other tombs remain in the middle of busy central roads in Herat, with residents repeatedly demanding their removal.
