Spanish PM Sanchez Calls War on Iran a 'Colossal Mistake'
MADRID (Afghan Verified) — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the war on Iran as a "colossal mistake" during a parliamentary address on Wednesday, warning of unacceptable humanitarian, economic and security costs for Spain.
Sanchez stated the current conflict is "much worse" than the 2003 Iraq war and could have broader consequences for the Middle East and the world. He emphasized that Spain has refused to allow the United States to use its Rota and Moron military bases for Iran-related operations, including refueling, calling the war illegal.
The prime minister announced a 5 billion euro government response plan to protect households and businesses from the war's economic fallout, including aid, tax exemptions and support measures. He cautioned that every bomb dropped in the Middle East would impact European families through rising prices, energy pressures and wider instability.
Sanchez reiterated Spain's opposition to military escalation, urging diplomacy instead. The country has a history of large anti-war protests, as seen during the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and has recently voiced support for international law, Palestinian statehood and diplomatic solutions in the region.
His remarks highlight Spain's rejection of involvement in the Iran war as the conflict broadens.
