Reconstruction of runway at Ghor's Sultan Ghiyathuddin Ghori Airport begins
The reconstruction of more than 800 meters of the runway at Sultan Ghiyathuddin Ghori Airport in Ghor province has begun.
Pohanmal Rustom Hafiz Yar, head of Planning and Development at the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, stated that the project involves rebuilding a runway measuring 820 meters long and 30 meters wide at a cost of 86 million Afghanis from the ministry's development budget. The work will be completed using these funds.
Hafiz Yar added that the runway had been damaged, causing problems for aircraft flights, and the repair and reconstruction began in the presence of several officials.
He noted that work on a cargo and passenger terminal is planned to begin in the province next year.
At the project's inauguration, Al-Haj Sheikh Fazlur Rahman Jahani, deputy of the Ghor Ulema Council, expressed gratitude for the efforts of elders and officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan across sectors. He described the start of the runway reconstruction as an important and valuable step toward improving Ghor's transportation issues.
Sultan Ghiyathuddin Ghori Airport was constructed in 1346 (1967) as the province's first airport, with an initial runway of 700 meters long and 30 meters wide, shaped for small aircraft. It was expanded to 2,000 meters in 1352 (1973), and in 1390 (2011), the 2,000-meter by 30-meter runway was asphalted.
