Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that his country is unable to join US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" due to insurmountable conflicts between Italy's constitution and the board's charter.

Tajani told the ANSA news agency that the differences are "legally irreconcilable from a legal standpoint," though Italy remains "available to discuss peace initiatives." He made the comments after a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Vice President JD Vance on the margins of the Winter Olympics in Milan.

Trump ratified the charter of the "Board of Peace" on January 22, 2026, describing it as an initiative to resolve global conflicts, including in the Middle East. Initially presented as linked to Gaza's reconstruction, the charter reportedly makes no mention of Gaza. The US Department of State listed seven executive members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner.

Trump invited about 60 countries to join, with 26 having signed on so far, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

During the meeting, Tajani indicated Italy's willingness to contribute to Gaza by training police forces.

Some analysts have criticized the board, saying it lacks legitimacy, could undermine the United Nations, and might negatively affect the Palestinian issue, noting it largely comprises US allies.
