Iran's ambassador to Kabul, Ali Reza Bikdeli, stated there is no obstacle to recognizing the Taliban administration and that talks are ongoing, with Tehran set to extend recognition soon.

In an interview with Tolo News broadcast on Tuesday, Bikdeli said the current level of relations, including mutual ambassadors in Tehran and Kabul, trade exchanges and a desire to expand ties, already indicates a form of recognition. "Regarding recognition, we will certainly take our own initiative, which all of you will admire. The Islamic Republic will use the issue of recognition to elevate the level of relations," he said.

Bikdeli described Afghanistan as the country closest to Iran, adding that the two sides have become "good partners" amid expanding commercial and economic relations.

The ambassador expressed concern over foreign intervention in Afghanistan but provided no further details. He referenced prior Iranian worries about a potential U.S. return to Bagram air base or establishment of an American military base in the country.

If Iran proceeds with formal recognition, it would become the second country after Russia to do so.
