Iran sentences Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi to more than seven years in prison

Iranian authorities have sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to more than seven years in prison, including exile and travel bans, according to official confirmation.
The sentence comprises six years for alleged collusion against national security and 18 months for propaganda against the state. Mohammadi, 53, informed her lawyer of the verdict during a brief phone call from detention, her support organization said. She ended a week-long hunger strike on Sunday after protesting her detention conditions and legal proceedings.
Mohammadi was arrested in December following remarks at a memorial ceremony in Mashhad, where authorities accuse her of encouraging protest slogans. She received the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy for women's rights and opposition to the death penalty in Iran.
Human rights organizations have criticized Iran's detention of activists and restrictions on political and civil society figures. The ruling is expected to prompt further international debate on Iran's treatment of activists amid ongoing global scrutiny of human rights conditions there.
