The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced it has provided cash assistance to approximately 2,000 returning migrant families in Nangarhar province. The ICRC stated that many of these vulnerable families are living in the open without shelter.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, 20 Hoot, the ICRC said the cash support helps returnees meet their immediate needs and aims to enable a dignified life in the country.

UN spokesperson Stefan Dujařík previously expressed deep concern over the impact of rising regional conflicts on Afghan migrants and refugees. He referred to tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan, warning they would trigger a wave of Afghan returns.

Reports indicate more than 5 million Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan since October 2023. These mass and hasty returns have placed heavy pressure on Afghanistan's human and economic capacities.

International organizations have repeatedly warned that returns for many Afghans, particularly female activists, journalists, former government military personnel and collaborators with international forces, are not safe in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
