ICRC: 92 Killed, 375 Injured in Afghanistan Mine and UXO Incidents in 2025

KABUL (Afghan Verified) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross reported 217 incidents involving mines and unexploded ordnance in Afghanistan in 2025, killing 92 people and injuring 375.

Children made up 66% of the casualties, totaling 309 individuals.

The eastern regions recorded the most incidents with 67, followed by the western, southern, central and southeastern regions.

The ICRC assisted more than 6,750 mine and unexploded ordnance victims through rehabilitation centers last year. The highest numbers were in Kabul with 2,221, Jalalabad with 1,328, Mazar-i-Sharif with 924 and Herat with 871.

From 2023 to 2025, the ICRC trained 120 Afghan Red Crescent Society volunteers and held awareness sessions reaching over 210,500 people, including 130,742 children.

Among the victims was 12-year-old Mohammad Asif from Herat, who lost a leg in an explosion that also killed three cousins and his infant sister. He received rehabilitation support from the ICRC.

Twenty-five-year-old Marzieh Hosseini from Mazar-i-Sharif lost both legs to a mine explosion but was fitted with prosthetics by the ICRC and has resumed dairy farming.

The ICRC stressed the continued need for mine clearance and risk education, particularly to safeguard children.
