An explosion at Jiapeng Biotechnology, a small biotech company in Shuoyang, Shanxi province, killed eight people early Saturday, China's state media reported Sunday.

The incident took place in the early morning in a mountain hollow, where dark yellow smoke was seen billowing from the site, Xinhua News Agency reported. The legal representative of the company has been detained, and the city has established an accident investigation team.

Jiapeng Biotechnology, founded in June 2025, conducts research on animal feed, coal products and building materials, according to its corporate registration. The company does not maintain a website, and Reuters was unable to contact it.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.
