Attack on Picnickers in Herat's Dahmiry Village Kills at Least 13, No Claim of Responsibility

HERAT, Afghanistan (Afghan Verified) -- Four armed men on motorcycles attacked picnicking families in Dahmiry village, Anjil district of Herat province, on April 10, killing at least 13 people. No group has claimed responsibility six days later.

An anonymous eyewitness described the assailants arriving around 3 p.m., issuing harsh warnings against recreation, separating men and women, collecting mobile phones, shooting the village arbab and then firing indiscriminately at families in tents and a nearby farmer before leaving calmly.

Taliban local officials stated one person was arrested in connection with the incident but provided no further details.

Shia elders and clerics met with the Taliban governor in Herat and requested permission for a demonstration over the attack, which was denied due to security concerns.

The bodies of eight victims were buried from Saadieh Mosque in Herat city.

Amu TV reported at least 13 deaths, while the Express Tribune cited Herat's information office in reporting 11 deaths and confirming one suspect arrested.
