
Armed Attack in Herat's Dehmiri Village Kills 11-13 Shia Civilians
An armed attack took place after Friday lunch in Dehmiri village near Herat city, targeting non-military Shia civilians who were visiting a nearby shrine for recreation.
Local sources reported 13 people killed and nine wounded in the incident. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) gave a toll of 11 killed and 11 wounded.
Among the dead were Sultan Ahmad Ekberi, a 63-year-old tribal elder; his sons Ali Akbar Ekberi and Reza Ekberi, 38; Amir Ali Rasuli, an 18-year-old student; Masouma Rasuli; Homa Rasuli; Mohammad Reza Rasuli; Abdul Qadir, 35, a former TAPI employee; Ali Akbar Mohammadi; and Abdul Qadir Dalawari, 44.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility two days after the attack. A Taliban spokesperson stated that security forces arrested one person in connection with the incident.
Human rights activists have called for an investigation into the attack. The bodies of the victims are scheduled to be buried on Tuesday.
