Afghanistan's National Buzkashi Team Travels to Kazakhstan for World Championships
Afghanistan's 15-member national Buzkashi team has traveled to Kazakhstan to compete in the World Buzkashi Championships in Turkistan from March 15 to 21, 2026.
The General Presidency of Olympics, Physical Education, and Sports announced that the team, introduced by the National Buzkashi, Javelin Throwing, and Traditional Games Federation, consists of 12 chapandaz and three board members. The National Buzkashi Federation stated the event marks a return after a nine-year hiatus, with Afghanistan's last participation in 2017. Teams from nine countries will compete: Afghanistan, China, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Turkey.
In other sports news, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced the postponement of the national team's series against Sri Lanka, originally set to begin March 13, 2026, in the United Arab Emirates. The series, comprising three T20 matches in Sharjah Stadium and three 50-over matches in Dubai International Stadium, has been rescheduled for the final quarter of 2026 due to logistical issues stemming from the Middle East war. The board noted that despite preparations and coordination with UAE officials, recent developments made the matches impossible to hold as planned, with exact dates to be announced later.
Meanwhile, India's national cricket team won the T20 World Cup for the third time, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India scored 255 runs for five wickets, with Sanju Samson making more than 80 runs. Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets and was named player of the match.
