Zabul Farmers Build Greenhouses to Boost Crop Yields and Income

Farmers in Zabul province are constructing greenhouses to achieve higher crop yields at reduced costs, enabling year-round vegetable production.
Wali Mohammad, a 28-year-old resident of Shir Abad village in Qalat city, the provincial capital, has built 11 greenhouses where he cultivates various vegetables. He said: “I have set up 11 greenhouses and earn between 800 and 1,000 Afghanis per day. This is a very good initiative. If others start this work, God willing, many of their problems will be solved.”
Another farmer, Fida Mohammad, described greenhouses as a promising project but noted financial constraints among locals. He said: “People do not have the financial capacity; otherwise, this is a very good project. If the government provides some support, this work can move forward.”
Officials from the Zabul Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock have been promoting greenhouses by raising awareness among farmers and providing technical advice. Naqibullah Nijat, head of extension at the department, said: “When farmers come to us, we have engineers here who provide them with good advice.”
Department officials stated that greenhouses are bringing positive changes to the agricultural sector, allowing farmers to produce crops in all seasons. Some farmers in the province have already begun construction following the guidance.
