The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) stated that the day of delivery represents the greatest risk of death for women, with more than 700 women dying every day from various pregnancy and childbirth-related causes.

UNFPA reported on February 8 that one woman dies every two minutes, while between 20 and 30 other women suffer injuries, infections or disabilities related to childbirth during the same period.

According to UNFPA, most of these deaths and injuries are entirely preventable, and ensuring safer pregnancies constitutes a human rights obligation.

The agency operates in more than 150 countries, covering about 80 percent of the world's population. UNFPA collaborates with governments, health specialists and civil society organizations to train health workers, improve access to medicines and reproductive health services, and strengthen overall health care systems.
