UN Security Council Approves Resolution Condemning Iran's Attacks on Gulf Countries
The UN Security Council approved a resolution condemning Iran's attacks on Gulf countries after convening to vote on two draft resolutions.
The resolution, presented with Bahrain's cooperation and support from 135 other countries, passed with 13 votes in favor. Jamal Faris Al-Ruwaai, Bahrain's UN representative, stated that the measure sends "a clear and united message from the Security Council that Iran's missile and drone attacks on countries in the region are completely unacceptable and a clear violation of the UN Charter, international laws, and principles of good neighborliness."
Russia's draft resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East failed to pass, receiving four votes in favor, two against and nine abstentions. Following the vote, Russia's UN representative Vasily Nebenzia accused opposing countries of rejecting "a clear call to stop the war and resolve disputes peacefully." He added, "Excuses like focusing on Bahrain's draft and Gulf Cooperation Council countries are not acceptable. Russia's draft did not conflict with any documents presented by regional countries. Therefore, these statements are merely a false attempt to justify fear of supporting this initiative."
Mike Waltz, Security Council president and US UN representative, accused Russia of seeking to support Iran. He said, "Once again, Russia is trying to support its partner Iran in the Security Council. We reject Russia's attempt to equate the US's legal actions with Iran's violence and bloodshed against its own people and Gulf countries and the Middle East."
The approved resolution also condemns any Iranian action that blocks or disrupts ship passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The text makes no mention of US or Israeli airstrikes against Iran.
