European Parliament Hosts Military Groups Opposing Taliban

The European Union has emphasized engagement with the Taliban in recent years while avoiding official and public communication with opposing fronts. Belgium has hosted prior meetings on Afghanistan. The EU's External Action Service held a senior officials' meeting in Brussels on 27 Jowza 1404 (June 17, 2025) on Afghanistan's political situation, humanitarian needs, and basic requirements.
The European Parliament organized public sessions in 1401 (2022) on Afghan women's rights and a program titled "Days of Afghan Women." The EU pursues a "policy of limited and practical engagement" with the Taliban without recognizing it or granting political legitimacy.
European officials state this engagement aims to address Afghanistan's situation, aid its people, and address security concerns. The EU has repeatedly called for an inclusive system, human rights observance, counter-terrorism, and respect for women's and girls' rights in Afghanistan.
European institutions have condemned Taliban restrictions on women and girls, demanding their removal.
