Taliban Ministry of Defense Claims Drone Strike on Pakistani Camp in South Waziristan
The Taliban Ministry of Defense claimed a drone strike targeted a Pakistani military camp in the Wana area of South Waziristan, describing it as retaliation for Pakistani airstrikes in Kandahar province.
In a statement Sunday, the ministry said the drone attack struck facilities used by commandos of Pakistan's Special Service Group as well as other military installations. It claimed the strike caused heavy casualties and significant damage to Pakistani forces.
Authorities in Kabul said the preceding Pakistani airstrikes hit a drug rehabilitation hospital and an empty container in Kandahar, adding that the attacks caused no casualties. Pakistan described its operations as targeting militant positions near the border.
Pakistani officials have not commented publicly on the reported drone attack.
The incident underscores ongoing tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, which have included repeated airstrikes, artillery exchanges and mutual accusations of supporting militants in recent months.
