Sources Report Renewed Clashes Between Taliban and Pakistani Border Guards in Nangarhar Border Areas

Afghanistan International|

Security sources told Afghanistan International that on the evening of Wednesday, the 6th of Hoot, Taliban forces and Pakistani border guards clashed in the Khyber border region. The sources said the fighting continues and both sides are using heavy weapons.

Pakistani security sources confirmed to Afghanistan International that shooting is occurring simultaneously at multiple border points in Khyber district. They stated that exchanges of fire are ongoing in the Zakhakhel market. Pakistan's Khyber district borders the Afghan districts of Momandara, Achin and Lalpur in Nangarhar province.

Officials from both Pakistan and the Taliban have not issued official statements on this border clash.

The incident follows recent Pakistani airstrikes in several Afghan districts, after which the Taliban warned of retaliatory actions at an appropriate time.

On Tuesday, Taliban forces had also clashed with Pakistani border guards in Nangarhar border areas. The Pakistani government accused the Taliban of unprovoked firing on Pakistani forces along the border and stated it had responded effectively to the "incursion."

Musharraf Zaidi, spokesperson for Pakistan's prime minister, said in a statement on Tuesday that Taliban forces fired toward Pakistani forces from the Torkham and Tirah sectors along the border.
