Russian Military Court Sentences Former Defense Ministry Deputy to 19 Years for Bribery

MOSCOW (Afghan Verified) — The 235th Moscow military court sentenced Pavel Popov, a former deputy of Russia's Defense Ministry, to 19 years in prison on April 10 for receiving bribes on a very large scale and abusing official powers.

The court also imposed an 85 million ruble fine on Popov, deprived him of his Army General military rank and banned him from holding government positions for seven years.

Popov, who is 69 years old, did not attend the court hearing due to health issues and was informed of the verdict via video link from a detention center.

Prosecutors had demanded a 22-year prison sentence, a 130 million ruble fine and stripping of his military rank.

Popov's defense lawyer described the verdict as "illegal and unfounded" and announced plans to appeal it, including a request for a medical examination due to the defendant's health condition.
