Rubio: US and European Forces 'From Kapyong to Kandahar' Fought Together

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated at the Munich Security Conference that U.S. and European forces "have shed blood and lost lives together on battlefields from Kapyong to Kandahar."
Rubio emphasized that the transatlantic alliance is not merely a political or economic framework but is founded on shared historical and military experiences. He noted that the West rebuilt a devastated continent after two world wars and stood united against Soviet communism during the Cold War.
Referring to joint battles in various parts of the world, including Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, Rubio described these cooperations as a symbol of the "deep security and historical bond" between the U.S. and Europe. Kandahar was one of the most important centers of presence for international forces, particularly U.S. and NATO troops, during the Afghanistan war.
Rubio stressed the need to continue these partnerships in the new century, saying Washington seeks a "strong, capable alliance ready to defend common interests" with Europe.
