Qatar Welcomes Release of American Citizen by Taliban
The Qatari government has welcomed the release of Dennis Kvil, a United States citizen held by the Taliban for more than a year.
The Qatari government described the Taliban's action as a sign of goodwill towards the international community. The Qatari embassy in Kabul issued a statement on the social network X saying the release could be considered a positive step towards improving engagement with the global community.
The statement noted that Qatar was pleased to play a role in the humanitarian efforts that facilitated the release process. It emphasized the country's continued support for international initiatives aimed at addressing crises and conflicts.
Qatar also stated its backing for all efforts that contribute to strengthening security and stability in the region and the world.
The Taliban released Dennis Kvil on Tuesday. The process involved mediation by the United Arab Emirates and Qatar along with the apparent participation of Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US representative for peace affairs in Afghanistan.
The development followed the United States placing Afghanistan on the list of countries supporting unjust detentions. The United States State Department described the Taliban's move as a positive step but said more action was needed.
The department called for the immediate release of other American citizens in detention, including Mahmoud Habibi and Paul Urbi. It warned the Taliban to end the practice of hostage diplomacy.
