Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has defended Pakistan's border fencing along the Afghanistan frontier. The defense came during a session of the National Assembly.

He stated that the fencing and security infrastructure are required to protect lives. Sharif explained that they also serve to curb threats and reduce illegal crossings.

Even though the project costs billions of rupees, the prime minister said it is necessary. He emphasized that the expense is acceptable if it results in saving even one life.

The remarks addressed criticism from opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai. Achakzai had said that the border divides Pashtun communities.

According to Achakzai, this division leads to social and human consequences for the affected populations.

Sharif also referred to the installation of surveillance cameras and monitoring systems. These are part of the infrastructure along the nearly two thousand kilometer border.

The fencing project has been a topic of discussion due to its implications for security and cross border movement.
