Pakistan Police Arrest Afghan Rights Activist Naqibullah Akgar and Family
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Afghan Verified) — Pakistan police arrested Afghan human rights activist and educator Naqibullah Akgar along with his family on April 10, 2026, and transferred them to Haji Camp, raising fears of forced deportation to Afghanistan.
Sources familiar with the matter said Akgar, who was previously imprisoned by the Taliban for 49 days in 2021 over his human rights activities, could face significant risks if returned to Afghanistan.
The detention occurs amid a broader Pakistani crackdown on Afghan migrants. Authorities have intensified arrests and deportations following recent border clashes between Taliban forces and Pakistani military personnel. Those with legal documents have also been targeted in the sweeps.
Pakistan police have not issued any comment on Akgar's arrest or the status of his family.
Akgar's case highlights ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, exacerbated by cross-border incidents and Pakistan's efforts to repatriate undocumented Afghans. Haji Camp, located near the border, has been used as a holding facility for migrants prior to deportation.
