Nearly 100,000 in Nuristan's Kamdesh, Barg-i-Matal Lack Aid Access Due to Cross-Border Shootings
KABUL (Afghan Verified) — Nearly 100,000 residents in Nuristan province's Kamdesh and Barg-i-Matal districts have lacked access to humanitarian aid, markets and health services for about one month due to road blockages from cross-border shootings originating in Pakistan.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated on 17 Hamal that the route through Nari district in neighboring Kunar province is unusable for civilians and aid organizations because of the ongoing shootings. OCHA warned of severe shortages of food and medical equipment, as well as lack of access to markets and health services in the affected districts.
Local elders and residents reported appealing to Taliban authorities for assistance, but said they have received no action in response. A Taliban spokesman for the Nuristan governor previously confirmed the cross-border shootings on the route.
Nuristan Taliban governor Zain al-Abidin Abid announced last week that work is underway on alternative routes to reach Kamdesh and Barg-i-Matal districts.
