JUI-P Leader Fazlur Rahman Calls for End to Debate on Changing Governments in Afghanistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Fazlur Rahman, leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan (JUI-P), called for an end to the debate on changing governments in Afghanistan, describing Pakistan's historical efforts to alter regimes there as endless and ineffective.

Speaking at a press conference, Rahman criticized Pakistan's "incorrect perception" that it must control Afghanistan, saying it hinders improved relations between the two countries. He accused Pakistan of past interventions, including efforts against former King Zahir Shah, support for anti-communist factions and alignment with U.S. policies against the Taliban.

Rahman described Pakistan's diplomatic initiatives in Afghanistan as "failed" and faulted it for supporting the U.S. approach toward the Taliban. He relayed claims by Taliban spokesmen that Pakistan has attacked their facilities at the behest of the United States.

The remarks come amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban over the presence of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in Afghanistan. Pakistan has conducted cross-border attacks targeting TTP, while the Taliban deny harboring the group. United Nations reports have confirmed TTP presence in Afghanistan.

Rahman did not address allegations of Afghan Taliban support for the TTP.
