
Afghan-Born Activist Sanga Siddiqi Elected to D66 Leadership Board in Netherlands
ZOETERMEER, Netherlands — Sanga Siddiqi, an Afghan-born human rights activist, has been elected to the leadership board of the D66 party in Zoetermeer.
Siddiqui, who moved from Afghanistan to the Netherlands around 17 years ago, works as a financial specialist at the Dutch Ministry of Finance. She previously ran as a candidate for Zoetermeer's municipal council under the D66 banner.
Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai congratulated Siddiqi on X, praising the achievements of Afghan women. "Proud of our daughters who continue to shine abroad," Karzai wrote in his message.
The election is being welcomed by the Afghan diaspora as a positive step for migrant women's political participation in the Netherlands. Siddiqi's success highlights the growing involvement of Afghan expatriates in Dutch politics.
D66, known as Democrats 66, is a progressive liberal party in the Netherlands. Zoetermeer is a city in the province of South Holland, located near The Hague.
