Japan Announces 2027 MEXT Scholarships for Afghan Students

The Embassy of Japan in Afghanistan has opened applications for the 2027 MEXT scholarship program, offering fully funded opportunities for Afghan students to pursue research-level studies. The scholarships are specifically available for those seeking master's or doctoral degrees; undergraduate applications are not being accepted.

Selection for the program is based on merit, involving a review of documents, written examinations, and interviews. The embassy stated that the selection process is independent and non-discriminatory regarding religion, language, or ethnicity.

The Aga Khan Foundation is collaborating with the embassy to collect applications and facilitate the examination process, although it has no role in the final selection of candidates. Written exams will be conducted in person in Kabul, and remote participation is not permitted.

The embassy emphasized that the application process is free of charge and warned applicants to be cautious of potential fraud. There are differing reports regarding the submission deadline, with some sources stating it is May 25, 2026, and others citing May 26, 2026.
