Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indian citizens to conserve fuel and reduce non-essential spending to protect the country's foreign currency reserves. This appeal comes as global oil prices surge due to escalating tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
To lower overall transportation demand, Modi suggested reviving practices from the COVID-19 pandemic, including working from home and conducting meetings online. He also called for a reduction in non-essential foreign travel and requested that citizens limit gold purchases for weddings for at least one year to safeguard the national economy.
The Prime Minister's recommendations extended to other essential resources. He urged households to reduce their consumption of edible oil and called on farmers to cut their use of chemical fertilizers by half to mitigate the impact of rising costs and resource scarcity.
India currently imports more than 85 percent of its crude oil requirements, making the national economy highly vulnerable to international market fluctuations. Russia has become India's largest oil supplier following the imposition of Western sanctions on Moscow. Despite the current global volatility in energy markets, the Indian government stated it has no immediate plans to increase domestic fuel prices for consumers.
