Iranian Foreign Minister Says Israeli Strikes on Tehran Fuel Depots Violate International Law
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Israeli strikes on fuel storage facilities in Tehran constitute a serious violation of international law and could cause long-term environmental damage.
Writing on X on Monday, Araghchi described the attacks as "environmental genocide." He warned that residents near the targeted facilities face serious and long-lasting health risks from toxic pollution released into the surrounding environment. He added that contamination of soil and underground water resources may lead to environmental and public health consequences affecting communities for generations.
Araghchi called for Israel to be held accountable under international law, arguing that attacks on civilian infrastructure and environmental resources amount to potential war crimes.
The remarks come amid intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel, with both sides reporting new military strikes and retaliatory operations across the region. Regional tensions have involved the United States, which has supported Israeli operations and warned Iran against further escalation.
Recent weeks have seen repeated attacks on energy infrastructure, military sites and strategic facilities, raising concerns over wider environmental and humanitarian impacts. Continued strikes on energy infrastructure risk worsening regional instability and broadening the Middle East conflict.
