Indian authorities at Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai seized 46 containers carrying Chinese almonds that had been declared as Afghan products.

According to a report in the Hindu Business Line newspaper, the ship carrying the containers departed from Iran's Bandar Abbas port and has been detained for more than two weeks. One individual has been arrested in connection with the case, which authorities say was an attempt to evade taxes amounting to approximately $5.6 million.

The report notes that almonds from the United States and Chile have previously been imported into India under the label of Afghan products to benefit from duty exemptions offered by India to certain regional countries.

Indian officials stated that the recently seized shipment entered India using fake transit documents, with the packaging still bearing Chinese inscriptions.
