Former Turkmenistan President Prioritizes Completion of TAPI Pipeline's First Section by 2026

Qurbanquli Berdimuhamedov, former president of Turkmenistan, stated that completing the first section of the TAPI gas pipeline project by the end of 2026 is a priority in the country's energy programs.

In an interview, Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Ashgabat welcomes participation from international companies in the project. The TAPI pipeline aims to transport natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India, ranking among the region's most significant energy initiatives.

Turkmenistan officials indicated that the initial segment, extending to Herat in Afghanistan, is likely to be completed by the end of 2026. No specific timeline has been announced for the continuation toward Pakistan and India.

Turkmenistan, one of the world's largest natural gas reserve holders, currently exports most of its gas to China due to limited export routes. Berdimuhamedov stressed that diversifying these routes is the main goal of the country's energy policy.

Berdimuhamedov, who served as president from 2007 to 2022 before transferring power to his son Serdar Berdimuhamedov, retains influence as 'National Leader.' In his discussion with Al Arabiya, he mentioned U.S. support for TAPI, noting that its implementation could enhance regional economic and energy cooperation. However, he highlighted the need for security assurances and resolution of political challenges among transit countries.

Additionally, Turkmenistan supports the Trans-Caspian pipeline project, which would carry its gas via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, and Turkey to Europe. Officials stated that disputes with Azerbaijan over Caspian Sea bed boundaries must be settled before proceeding.
