Former Afghan Special Forces Member Killed in Norway

An Afghan citizen was killed and his wife injured in an attack by unidentified individuals in Bergen, Norway, on Sunday evening, February 9, 2026, equivalent to 19 Dalu in the Afghan calendar.
Two family members of the victim told Afghanistan International that he was a former member of Afghanistan's Unit 222 special forces. The couple had fled to Norway after the fall of the previous Afghan government.
Norwegian police confirmed on Monday that an Afghan citizen died from injuries sustained in a violent incident in Bergen, with his wife also wounded. According to police, the young man was attacked outside his residence in the Arena area. He succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, while the assailant fled before security forces arrived.
Police described the killing as intentional and have launched a large-scale operation using police dogs and drones to identify and arrest the perpetrator. Checkpoints have been set up across parts of Bergen, but no arrests have been made as of the latest reports. The victim's body was to be transferred to forensics on Tuesday for further examination.
One relative said police have not provided any information on the attacker's identity or motive. Afghan residents in Norway have expressed concerns for their security since the country handed over the Afghan embassy to the Taliban in April 2025. It remains unclear who was behind the killing of the former Afghan government officer.
