Kabul's Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DAB) and Aziz Group signed a contract on Wednesday for the production of 330 megawatts of solar power and 515 megawatts of thermal power, totaling 845 megawatts.

Abdul Haq Hamkar, the Taliban-appointed head of DAB, stated that the project will generate 3.7 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually. He detailed the components: 100 MW solar in the Naghlu area of Kabul, 100 MW solar in Barikab district of Parwan province, 130 MW solar in Ghazni province, 350 MW coal-fired thermal power in Baghlan province, and 165 MW coal-fired thermal power in Takhar province.

Hamkar said the projects, costing approximately $463 million, will be implemented by Aziz Group. Solar projects are expected to be completed in two years, while thermal coal projects will take two and a half to three years. He added that the initiatives will create direct and indirect employment opportunities for thousands.

Mirwais Aziz, head of Aziz Group and a prominent Afghan businessman, noted during the ceremony that some equipment for the projects has already been purchased.

Neither DAB nor Aziz Group provided further details on the projects. Afghanistan currently meets most of its electricity needs through imports.
