Afghanistan Floods Destroy Nearly 1,000 Homes, Exacerbate Shelter Crisis

Recent heavy rains, flash floods and landslides across Afghanistan have destroyed nearly 1,000 homes completely and partially damaged more than 4,000 others, according to reports from the National Disaster Management Authority and Taliban authorities.

The disasters, which struck over the past 11 days, also included a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in the Hindu Kush region on April 3. Ariana News reported more than 110 people killed, at least 160 injured and seven missing nationwide. It cited at least five deaths in Nangarhar province from mud house collapses due to heavy rain.

In Kandahar province, the National Disaster Management Authority distributed food and non-food aid to 109 flood-affected families, with support from international partners including Save the Children.

Khaama Press quoted UN-Habitat as saying the floods have worsened Afghanistan's shelter crisis, with 4.2 million people now requiring emergency housing support amid repeated climate disasters. Taliban authorities reported more than 958 homes completely destroyed and 4,155 partially damaged in several provinces.

The National Disaster Management Authority said it continues to monitor unstable weather conditions, issue warnings and coordinate responses to mitigate further risks.
