US-Iran Announce Two-Week Ceasefire Linked to Strait of Hormuz Reopening
The United States and Iran have announced a two-week ceasefire, with the agreement linked to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for oil and gas flows.
US President Donald Trump commented positively on the truce, noting ongoing talks for long-term peace. Iran's Supreme National Security Council stated that halting military actions is conditioned on the cessation of attacks and outlined a 10-point proposal for negotiations.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the ceasefire covers "everywhere," including Lebanon, and invited delegations to Islamabad for talks. Israel expressed support for the US-Iran ceasefire aimed at halting attacks on Iran but insisted it would continue military operations against Lebanon. Netanyahu's office confirmed this position, disputing the inclusion of Lebanon.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the ceasefire, urging all Middle East parties to uphold international commitments and protect civilians. Several countries, including Japan, Iraq, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea and Indonesia, also welcomed the agreement and pledged support for diplomatic efforts toward lasting peace.
US crude oil prices dropped 16.5 percent to $94 per barrel following the announcement, according to Hurriyat. Reports indicated negotiations in Islamabad could begin on April 10, per Khaama Press, or April 21, according to Pajhwok.
