US Announces New Details on Review of 2021 Afghanistan Withdrawal

The US Department of War has announced that a special panel examining the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan has completed the main phase of interviews with senior military and civilian officials and reviewed more than nine million documents.

The panel, led by Shan Parnell, was established by order of Donald Trump at the initiative of the Secretary of War to conduct the most comprehensive military review in contemporary history. This effort is significantly more extensive than a prior review carried out under Lloyd Austin, which examined only about three thousand documents, some with information withheld due to classification.

The goal of the review is to produce the clearest and most honest report on the events of August 2021 and the fall of the previous Afghan regime. It focuses on identifying weaknesses in decision-making to avoid repeating them in the future.

Detailed interviews were conducted with key figures, including senior US generals involved in the withdrawal. Analysis of the documents, matching of findings and preparation of recommendations is now underway, with the final report expected to be presented to the American people in the coming months.
