UNFPA: Digital Tools Used by Midwives Save Mothers' and Newborns' Lives
KABUL — The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announced that the use of digital tools by midwives in remote areas of Afghanistan has saved the lives of mothers and newborns.
UNFPA reported on Tuesday that the Safe Delivery App (SDA), introduced in Dari in 2022, has become a primary and practical tool for midwives handling emergency cases.
The app offers clinical guidelines, step-by-step videos and interactive resources, allowing midwives to provide safer care for mothers and newborns even with minimal facilities.
UNFPA noted that in Afghanistan, many women still give birth at home or in small local clinics, where maternal and newborn mortality rates remain at high levels. The organization emphasized that the app can play a vital role in such conditions.
Pregnant women in rural and remote areas often lack access to health services, equipped medical centers and female doctors. To reach health clinics, they must travel long and dangerous routes.
