UNDP Official Calls for Expanded Access to Boost Gaza Aid and Reconstruction
Achmed Steiner, Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), during a visit to the Gaza Strip, called for greater access to increase aid delivery and accelerate reconstruction efforts.
Alexander de Croo stated that UNDP has assisted Palestinian entrepreneurs in restarting their businesses, creating nearly 6,000 jobs so far. He said: "So far, we have been able to create 6,000 jobs. This is part of reconstruction efforts; we are reactivating the economy, employing people, and ensuring they can reconnect with the future they deserve."
De Croo warned of extensive housing needs in Gaza, noting that more than 300,000 families require shelter and only 10% of the population has minimum housing facilities. He added that at the current debris clearance rate, the process could take up to seven years. He further stated: "90% of the population is seeking shelter. The conditions people are forced to live or survive in are very difficult. We have one main request: give us more access so we can help more people."
Gaza health officials said large parts of the area have been reduced to ruins after two years of Israeli bombing, with nearly 68,000 Palestinians killed in the raids. According to a UN monthly center report, nearly 83% of buildings in Gaza have been damaged.
