Two Killed, Eight Injured in Seven Traffic Incidents in Logar Province
Traffic incidents remain a major cause of death and injury across Afghanistan. In one recent example, seven separate traffic incidents took place across Logar province within the past twenty-four hours. The accidents claimed the lives of two people and left eight others injured, with six of the injured said to be in critical condition and hospitalized.
These events were concentrated in the areas of Altamor, Kotol Tireh, Shesh Qala, and Pork. Local Taliban officials in Logar have verified the occurrence of the incidents. The officials pointed to driver carelessness, speeding, and violations of traffic regulations as the main reasons behind the crashes.
At the same time, local citizens have placed part of the blame on the authorities. They criticize the officials for failing to maintain the roads properly and for not providing sufficient traffic signs. The citizens consider traffic incidents to be among the deadliest events that occur in the province.
The situation in other parts of the country appears similar. Ehsanullah Kamgar, who serves as spokesman for the Taliban Police Command, reported on the statistics from Badakhshan province for the previous year. According to him, there were one hundred and twenty-two traffic incidents in that province. These led to one hundred and thirty-six people losing their lives and one hundred and seventy-five sustaining injuries.
Such figures from Badakhshan and the recent events in Logar highlight the persistent challenges related to road safety in Afghanistan. Both driver behavior and infrastructure issues seem to play a role based on the statements from officials and residents alike.
