Taliban Spokesperson Offers 'Cooperation Within Ability' to Iran Amid Potential US Conflict

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban, stated in a recent interview with the Pashto service of Iran's international radio that Afghans are prepared to sympathize with Iran and cooperate 'within their ability' in the event of war or problems with the United States.

Mujahid said: 'First, we are not in favor of war. The other issue is that you remember when Iran was attacked, the result was that Iran won. I think this time too it will be like that. Iran is right, Iran's defense is right. Whatever voice we can, Afghans are ready to sympathize with Iran in war and problems and cooperate within their ability.'

Hasht-e Subh analyzed the remarks as distinguishing between the Taliban regime and ordinary Afghans, portraying them as an expression of collective sentiment rather than a formal commitment by the Taliban. The outlet suggested Mujahid aimed to signal to the US that Afghans might side with Iran due to historical, geographical, linguistic, and religious ties, while avoiding direct confrontation.

The analysis posited that any cooperation would likely be limited, such as opening Afghanistan's borders to Iranian refugees fleeing conflict, rather than military involvement against the US. It noted the timing coincided with comments by Iran's ambassador to Afghanistan, Alireza Bikdeli, who indicated no major obstacles to recognizing the Taliban regime at an appropriate time.

Hasht-e Subh argued that despite the statements, the Taliban ultimately prioritizes relations with the US, which holds greater influence over recognition and sanctions, compared to isolated Iran.
