Taliban Releases U.S. Citizen Dennis Keill After Judicial Review
The Taliban has released American citizen Dennis Keill, who was detained by the group, following a review by its Supreme Court and a request from his mother.
The Taliban Foreign Ministry announced the release on Tuesday, stating that Keill's imprisonment period was sufficient and that he had been detained for violating laws, not for political reasons. The ministry emphasized that no foreign citizens are held for political purposes and that the release followed judicial processes.
The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Keill was transferred to the UAE as part of a diplomatic process for handover to the United States. The statement highlighted the UAE's role as a reliable mediator, with representatives from both sides present during the operation.
Afghanistan International reported that the Taliban continues to hold at least two other U.S. citizens, Mahmudshah Habibi and Paul Orby. The U.S. State Department demanded their immediate release along with all other unjustly detained Americans, urging the Taliban to end its "hostage diplomacy" policy.
The outlet described the release as occurring amid U.S. pressure, including warnings from Trump administration officials, but noted the Taliban has incrementally freed detainees in the past without fully capitulating. Amu TV, however, framed the release solely as a judicial matter without reference to external pressures.
U.S. officials view the detention of Americans as a vulnerability for the Taliban rather than leverage, according to Afghanistan International.
