Taliban Flog 30 People in Four Provinces

The Taliban flogged 30 people in Farah, Paktika, Nimruz and Nangarhar provinces for offenses including extramarital relations, theft, beating a father and failure to fast, the Taliban's Supreme Court said.

The Supreme Court confirmed the punishments, which were carried out by local courts on Wednesday, the 12th of Hamal. In Paktika province, two people received 35 lashes and two-year prison sentences for extramarital relations. In Balabluk district of Farah province, five people were flogged 20 to 39 times for theft and extramarital relations. In Nimruz province, 17 people were sentenced to between five months and eight years in prison along with 15 to 39 lashes for offenses including beating a father, extramarital relations, theft and sexual relations. In Nangarhar province, six people got 20 lashes and two-month prison terms for not fasting.

The Supreme Court also confirmed floggings of two women and four men in Samangan and Balkh provinces. According to Taliban statements, at least 57 people have been flogged across the country in the past week for various charges.

A United Nations report described executions and public floggings in Afghanistan as serious human rights violations.
