Russian security forces have thwarted a terrorist attack targeting a senior Russian Defense Ministry official in St. Petersburg, according to Russian media reports.

Russia attributed the assassination attempt to Ukrainian officials. RIA Novosti reported Thursday that the operational information center stated two Russian citizens were arrested while attempting to carry out orders from Ukraine's special services. The suspects, in coordination with representatives from Kyiv, transferred explosives, identified the Russian military official's residence and installed a bomb under his vehicle. Security forces discovered and neutralized the device.

The detained individuals confessed to the crime, and judicial proceedings for criminal charges are underway.

Separately, on Friday an assassination attempt targeted Vladimir Alekseev, general and first deputy head of the main directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, in Moscow. An unidentified individual fired several shots at Alekseev in a residential building on Volokolamsk Highway before fleeing the scene.

Alekseev was wounded and taken to a city hospital. Criminal investigations into attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms have begun. Security forces are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.

Experts indicated that the two incidents highlight ongoing threats against Russian military officials within the country and the complexity of terrorist threats and targeted attacks in Russia.
