Reports indicate a rocket struck the United States Embassy compound in Baghdad, Iraq, on Saturday.
Associated Press, citing two Iraqi officials, reported that at least one rocket landed inside the embassy compound in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, where diplomatic missions and government buildings are located. Images circulating online showed smoke rising from the embassy area. Al Jazeera, as cited by RTA, reported that the rocket hit the helicopter landing pad at the embassy, with no details provided on casualties or damage.
US embassy officials have not issued an immediate statement on the strike or any possible damage. The Baghdad embassy is one of the largest US diplomatic facilities worldwide and has been targeted previously by rockets and drones, many attributed to Iran-aligned armed groups opposing the US military presence in Iraq.
The incident follows a US military refueling aircraft crash in western Iraq, for which an Iran-aligned militia claimed responsibility. Separate reports noted Iranian missiles targeting a US facility at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, damaging five KC-135 refueling aircraft but causing no casualties; the planes are under repair.
Meanwhile, the US State Department ordered all non-essential American employees and their families in Oman to leave due to security risks.
